The basement stairs were so narrow and treacherous. All we could think was, "if they're this hard now, how will it be in ten years?"

Balloon construction over time without adequate foundation reinforcement meant that the old gal was sinking in the middle. We added xx new lally columns and xxx beams to stop the descent. It was too risky to all the original woodwork and glass to try to raise the floors to be level.
